In the southeastern US we typically get more than 60 inches of rain per year. In extreme environments like this we need extreme solutions. The Aerial Companies, Inc. uses the Schlüter®-DITRA-DRAIN MAT system to improve drainage of exposed exterior elevated stone and marble deck assemblies.
Schluter-DITRA-XL is a polyethylene membrane with a grid structure of square cavities, each cut back in a dovetail configuration, and an anchoring fleece laminated to its underside. Schluter-DITRA is bonded to the substrate using thin-set mortar. The anchoring fleece on the underside of Schluter-DITRA-XL is engaged in the mortar to provide a mechanical bond to the substrate. Tile is installed over Schluter-DITRA-XL using the thin-bed method in such a way that the mortar becomes mechanically anchored in the square, cutback cavities of the Schluter-DITRA-XL matting.
Only Use Schlüter over a properly sloped and waterproofed surface.
KERDI strips are installed and embedded in Latticrete 254 prior to installation of the DITRA Mat. Schlüter-KERDI is a crack bridging waterproof membrane made of soft polyethylene, which has been covered on both sides with a special fleece webbing to anchor the membrane in suitable tile adhesive.
The DITRA-DRAIN mat consists of a closed polyethylene mat that on one side features approximately 4 mm high conical studs with a laminated filter fleece fabric. Some of these studs are shaped as approximately 2 mm high inverted truncated pyramids, which form square undercut chambers on the underside. These facilitate the bonding of the thin-bed mortar.
Schlüter-DITRA-DRAIN uncouples the tile from the substrate and mitigates the differential movement stresses between the substrate and the tile. The material effectively bridges tension cracks from the substrate.
Once in place the Drain-Mat provides a pathway for water to travel into the properly installed drain assemblies. As an alternative some installations include drainage to the outside edge of a deck over the flashing detail.
